What Is DWR? Durable Water Repellent Explained for Dog Gear
DWR stands for durable water repellent, and it may be the most misunderstood three letters on a gear page. It is a finish that makes water bead and roll off the face of a fabric while the fabric underneath keeps breathing. It is not a waterproof membrane, and it is not the silicone impregnation we covered in our silpoly primer. Those three things get lumped together constantly, and the confusion leads people to expect the wrong performance from the right gear. This is the plain-language version, including how our layering system uses DWR, why the finish fades, and how to bring it back at home.
What DWR actually is
DWR is a finish, not a fabric. It is an ultra-thin treatment applied to the outer face of a cloth that lowers the surface energy of the fibers. Water cannot spread across a low-energy surface. It pulls into beads, and beads roll. Tilt the fabric, shake it, or let the wind hit it, and the moisture is gone before it soaks in. The opposite condition is called wetting out, when water spreads flat across the face and saturates it. DWR exists to prevent exactly that.
It helps to be equally clear about what DWR is not. It is not a waterproof membrane laminated into the fabric. It is not a coating that seals the weave shut. And it is not silicone impregnation, which soaks into the cloth and cures inside it, closing the fabric against water through its full thickness. A DWR finish changes how the surface behaves. It does not change whether water can eventually pass through the fabric. Put a DWR-finished cloth under sustained rain for long enough and the finish loses the argument.
What DWR gives up in absolute protection, it keeps in breathability. Because the finish sits on the face rather than sealing the weave, air and water vapor still move through the fabric. That one property decides where the finish belongs in a layering system, and it is the thread that runs through the rest of this article.

DWR vs waterproof: two different jobs
A DWR-finished fabric sheds light moisture. Drizzle, spindrift, melting snow, the wet brush that drapes over a trail after a storm — all of it beads and rolls before it can soak the face. What a DWR fabric will not do is hold out hours of sustained rain, because nothing in the fabric physically blocks water. A waterproof fabric is the opposite bargain. Silicone-impregnated silpoly is sealed through its whole thickness. Water does not pass, wind does not pass, and, this is the part gear marketing tends to whisper, vapor does not pass either. A truly waterproof layer does not breathe.
Our layering system splits those two jobs on purpose instead of pretending one fabric can do both. The Traverse Shell is silicone-impregnated silpoly with no DWR finish at all. It is the storm layer, waterproof and windproof, and we will not tell you it vents, because it does not. The Traverse Puffy is the DWR piece in the line. Its recycled ripstop shell carries a DWR finish that sheds light moisture while the fabric stays breathable, so the warmth and moisture a working dog generates, from panting and the condensation that follows hard effort, keep moving out through the layer instead of collecting under it.
The Puffy's insulation backs the finish up honestly. The fill is Climashield, a continuous-filament synthetic that holds its loft when damp. So on the day the weather outruns the DWR, the piece degrades gracefully instead of failing outright. The Traverse Fleece rounds out the system at the far end of the spectrum, the most breathable layer we make, with no weather finish at all, because its job is warmth and moisture movement under the other two.
Waterproof means blocked in both directions. DWR means shedding in one direction and breathing in the other, and that is why the finish lives on the insulation layer, not the storm layer.
Why DWR fades, and what wetting out looks like
The D in DWR is doing generous work. The finish is durable relative to the wash-out repellents that came before it, not permanent. Three things wear it down: abrasion, grime, and oils. On human gear that means pack straps and shoulder seams. On dog gear it means brush raking the flanks, deadfall scraped under, the ground itself every time a dog drops and rolls, and the coat oils working into the lining and around every edge of the fabric. Dirt and oils do not just abrade the finish. They sit on top of it and raise the surface energy back up, which invites water to spread even where the chemistry underneath is still intact.
You will see the fade before you understand it. Water stops beading at the wear points first, usually along the back and sides where brush and contact are constant. Instead of bright beads, you get dark, spreading patches. The fabric feels heavier and clammy, and it is slower to dry at the trailhead. A wetted-out face also chokes off breathability, because vapor cannot move through saturated cloth, so the layer feels colder and damper from the inside too.
Here is the part worth internalizing: wetting out is a tired finish, not a failed garment. The ripstop is fine. The seams are fine. The insulation is fine. Gear gets replaced over this constantly, and it should not be. The fix costs a wash cycle and a small bottle, and it restores the piece to very near its first-day shedding.
When beading turns to dark patches, the finish is worn, not the gear — and a worn finish is a maintenance job, not a shopping trip.
How to renew DWR at home
Start with cleaning, because half of all "worn out" DWR is actually buried DWR. Wash the piece with a technical cleaner made for outdoor fabrics and follow the garment care label. Do not use fabric softener, ever. Softeners work by coating fibers with a film, and that film is the enemy of water beading. Standard detergents can leave residues that do the same at lower intensity, which is why the technical cleaner matters. Rinse thoroughly.
After cleaning, test before you treat. Sprinkle water on the dry fabric. If it beads and rolls, the finish was hiding under grime and you are done. If beading is weak, gentle heat can reactivate a DWR that still has life in it. A low-heat tumble, where the care label allows one, is often enough to restore the finish's orientation on the fibers. Check the label first and stay conservative with temperature.
If cleaning and heat do not bring the beading back, reapply. Renewal products come in two forms, and the choice matters more for insulated pieces than most instructions let on. A wash-in DWR treats every surface of the garment, inside and out. A spray-on treats only the face you spray. For an insulated piece like the Puffy, spray-on is usually the better tool, because it keeps the treatment on the outer face where the weather is, rather than loading the lining and the fill. Apply to clean, damp fabric, keep the coverage even, then heat-set exactly as the renewal product and the care label direct.
Then test again. Water should bead and roll on the face. If it does, the layer is back in rotation, and the whole job took less time than a trip to buy its replacement.
Clean first, heat second, reapply third — most DWR problems end at step one.
The PFAS note
DWR chemistry went through a reckoning, and it is worth knowing where things landed. For decades the standard finishes were fluorocarbon-based, part of the PFAS family, the so-called forever chemicals. They repelled water and oil exceptionally well, and they persisted in the environment just as exceptionally. Regulators moved. U.S. states began banning intentionally added PFAS in apparel and textiles starting January 1, 2025, with California and New York first and more states phasing in behind them, and the outdoor industry moved to PFAS-free DWR chemistries, sometimes labeled C0 or PFC-free.
The honest trade-off: PFAS-free finishes bead water well, but they are less oil-repellent than the old chemistry and generally need renewal somewhat more often. That makes the cleaning half of maintenance more important, not less, since coat oils and grime are exactly what a PFAS-free finish is weakest against. It is a fair price. A finish you refresh once a season is a better bargain than a chemistry that outlives the dog, the garment, and the watershed.
The renewal products followed the same path. The mainstream wash-in and spray-on DWR treatments sold today are PFAS-free, and the packaging says so. If it matters to you, and we think it should, check the label before you buy.
Modern DWR is PFAS-free by regulation and by industry consensus — slightly more maintenance, in exchange for chemistry that does not outlive everything it touches.
Reading conditions: when DWR is enough
The practical question is never "which finish is better." It is "what is the sky doing, and for how long." DWR is the right tool for cold-and-dry days, light or intermittent snow, frosted morning brush, and drizzle that comes and goes. It is especially right when the dog is working hard, because that is when breathability pays. A moving dog sheds heat and moisture through panting, and a breathable DWR layer lets that moisture out while shrugging off what the weather sends down. On a 20°F morning with flurries, the Puffy alone is the honest answer.
The full block is the right tool when precipitation is sustained or wind-driven, and when exposure is measured in hours rather than minutes. Steady rain, sleet, graupel riding a 30 mph wind above treeline — that is Shell weather, with the Puffy or the Fleece underneath if the temperature demands it. Expect the trade: the Shell holds everything out and lets nothing through, so it earns its place when blocking matters more than breathing. Our layering guide walks the combinations in detail.
