How to Choose a Dog Jacket: 7 Things That Actually Matter
Most guides to picking outerwear for a trail partner are really just brand rankings with a buy button attached. This is not that. Below are the seven decisions that actually change how a piece performs above treeline, in the order we weigh them ourselves: fit and cut, weight, weather protection, insulation, layering, range of motion, and whether the thing can be fixed when it tears. Get these right and the label on the collar stops mattering.
Start with the conditions, not the coat
The first mistake is shopping for a garment before you have described the day. A layer is an answer to a question, and the question is always the same: what is your trail partner moving through, for how long, and how hard. A short evening walk in dry 40°F air is a different problem than a ridgeline in 20 mph wind with sleet coming in sideways, and the same piece cannot be the right answer to both.
Write down the honest worst case you head into, not the average. I started Sundial after a 2022 hailstorm caught me on the Colorado Trail with my dog Kiefer, and the lesson was blunt: gear is judged by the hour it is tested, not the ten easy hours before it. Name your real conditions. Sustained precipitation, sub-freezing cold, exposure with no tree cover, wind that does not let up. Those specifics decide everything downstream. Choose the layer that answers the hardest day you will actually face, not the easiest one you imagine.
Fit and cut come before everything
A layer that does not fit is not a lesser layer. It is the wrong one, no matter how good the fabric is. Coverage that stops short of the last rib leaves the loin exposed. A hem that droops fouls the gait. A collar that gaps lets wind and water straight in at the chest, which is exactly where a lean trail partner loses heat fastest.
Breed labels are close to useless here, because two dogs of the same breed can carry length and girth completely differently. Measure instead. Girth at the deepest part of the chest is the number that decides fit more than any other, followed by back length from the base of the neck to the base of the tail, then neck circumference. Deep-chested and narrow-waisted builds deserve extra attention, since off-the-rack proportions rarely account for them; we wrote separately about fit for deep-chested builds for that reason.
Cut is the other half of fit. An articulated pattern, shaped for the way a body actually moves rather than a flat tube, is the difference between a piece that disappears on the trail and one that gets fought all day. Measure first and buy the cut that fits the body in front of you, because no fabric compensates for a layer that binds.
Weight is a feature, not a footnote
Every ounce on your trail partner is an ounce they carry uphill, mile after mile, and it is an ounce you carry when the weather turns and the layer comes off and goes in your pack. Weight is not a spec you tolerate. It is a feature you shop for, and it is the one most listicles ignore entirely because it is harder to photograph than a color.
This is the whole reason silpoly matters for a shell. Silicone-impregnated polyester carries water protection at a fraction of the weight of heavier coated fabrics, and it does not soak up and hold water the way some materials do. The principle behind the whole line is the same one we hold ourselves to: if it's not worth the weight, it's not worth making.
A useful gut check is whether a layer earns its place against its own mass. Warmth per ounce, protection per ounce, packed size per ounce. A heavy layer that is warm is easy to build. A light one that is warm and blocks weather is the actual engineering problem, and it is the one worth paying for. Weigh the whole kit, not one piece, because the number that matters is what leaves the trailhead on the animal and in your pack combined.
Treat weight as a performance number you optimize, not a footnote you accept.
Weather protection and insulation are two different jobs
Here is where most single-piece purchases go wrong. Waterproofing and insulation are separate problems, and a piece that tries to do both at once usually does neither well. A shell blocks wind and sustained precipitation. Insulation traps warm air against the body. Bolt them permanently together and you get a garment that is too warm the moment the animal starts working and useless the moment it stops.
On weather protection, breathability is the tradeoff nobody prints on the hangtag. A fully waterproof, windproof fabric like the silicone-impregnated silpoly in the Traverse Shell stops wind and sustained precipitation outright, and for the same reason it does not breathe: moisture does not pass out through it any more than rain passes in. That is not a defect. It is the deal you are making, so you run the shell when weather is the problem and shed it when the output climbs. A DWR-finished layer like the Traverse Puffy makes the opposite trade, giving up absolute weather blocking for better breathability, and a fleece breathes most of all. A dog sheds heat by panting, not by sweating through its coat, so no layer is going to vent the animal for you; the buyer's job is matching the layer to the output and the conditions, not expecting one piece to do it. Wind is its own hazard on exposed ground; the NWS wind chill chart shows how fast moving air pulls usable heat away, and a shell that cuts wind is often doing more for warmth than any amount of loft.
On insulation, the material choice comes down to one question: what happens when it gets wet. Synthetic fill keeps trapping warm air even when damp and dries faster, which is why we build the Traverse Puffy around synthetic fill inside a recycled ripstop shell rather than down. Match protection and warmth to the job each is doing, and never ask one layer to do both.
Layering beats one do-everything coat
Weather is not a fixed number. It is a range you pass through in a single day, and the temperature at the trailhead has almost nothing to do with the temperature on the ridge at 2 p.m. with a front moving in. A single piece is a bet that conditions will hold. Layering is a system that adapts as they change.
The logic is the same one backcountry travelers already run for themselves. A base layer for warmth, a mid layer for insulation, an outer layer for weather, each earning its place and each removable when the work heats the body or the sky clears. Where it's made, and whether you can fix it
The last two factors are the ones a buying guide almost never lists, and they are the ones that decide whether a piece is still working three seasons from now. The first is where and how it is made. The second is what happens the first time it tears on a scramble.
Made-to-order, small-batch construction is not a marketing texture. It changes the object. There is no warehouse of excess inventory to move, seams get built by someone who will hear about it if they fail, and the run is small enough to fix rather than defend. Repairability is the part that separates gear from products. A field-repairable ripstop can take a stitch or a patch and go back out; a bonded, glued, disposable construction cannot, and it ends its life in a landfill the first time it snags. Ask whether a torn seam can be restitched, whether the fabric holds a patch, and whether the maker will stand behind the piece long enough to matter. That question is the whole spirit behind how we started, and it is why we say gear earns its place in the pack, or it doesn't go.
Favor gear that can be repaired and made by people you can reach, because the greenest and best-value layer is the one you do not replace. Adventure On.
