How to Keep Your Dog Cool on Summer Trails
Dogs shed heat almost entirely by panting and sweat only through their paws, so summer heat builds faster than most people expect, especially under high-altitude sun and over hot rock. Plan around it: start early, take shade breaks on a schedule, offer water every 15 to 30 minutes, and soak the dog down when you can. Learn the signs of heat stress, from heavy relentless panting and thick drool to brick-red gums and a wobbly gait, and if you suspect heatstroke, cool the dog with water immediately, then get to a vet even if it seems to recover.
Heat Is the Summer Hazard, the Way Wind and Wet Own the Shoulder Seasons
We spend the shoulder seasons planning around wind and wet, because that is what strips heat off a dog when the days run cold. We covered that side of the year in what temperature is too cold for a dog. Summer flips the problem. Now the hazard is heat, and it deserves the same respect, because a dog's cooling system is far narrower than ours.
We sweat across our whole body and cool ourselves by evaporation everywhere at once. A dog does neither. Dogs shed heat almost entirely by panting, moving air over the tongue and airway so evaporation can carry heat out of the core, and they sweat only through their paw pads. That is the whole system. It works until the air gets hot enough, or humid enough, that evaporation cannot keep up, and then the heat a working dog generates has nowhere to go.
The mountains stack the deck. At elevation, a thinner atmosphere filters less of the sun, so the same clear day burns harder at 11,000 ft than it does in town, and above treeline there is nothing to break it. Rock is a storage heater on top of that: talus, slabs, and south-facing granite soak up sun all morning and radiate it back all afternoon, so the dog works between a heat source overhead and a heat source underfoot.
The last input is the dog itself. A driven trail partner does not ration effort. It will chase whatever miles you set in front of it and run itself into real trouble without complaint, which makes heat management your job, not the dog's. The thermometer will not make the call for you either. 75°F with full sun, still air, and radiant rock can be a harder day than 90°F in aspen shade.

Plan Around the Heat: Alpine Starts, Shade Breaks, and the Back-of-Hand Test
The cheapest cooling strategy is an alarm clock. The American Veterinary Medical Association's warm-weather safety guidance is blunt: do not walk, run, or hike with a dog during the hottest part of the day. In the mountains, that translates to the alpine start you should be making anyway. On trail at first light, the big miles done by late morning, and the exposed stretches behind you before the afternoon heat peaks. It is the same logic we lay out in hiking with your dog above treeline, where the storm schedule and the heat schedule happen to agree.
Break in shade on a schedule, not on demand. In real heat stop at least every 30 to 45 minutes, in the best shade available, long enough for the panting to settle and the dog to drink. Waiting for the dog to ask means waiting too long, because most dogs will not ask. And a break where the panting never settles is not a rest. It is information, and it means shorten the day.
Read exposure on the map the way you read water. Treeless ridgelines, south-facing switchbacks, talus fields, and old burn scars all cook by mid-morning. Note where the shade lives, where the route crosses running water, and where the bailouts are. A route with a creek at mile 4 and timber at mile 6 is a different proposition from the same mileage across open rock.
Then check the ground, because the ground runs hotter than the air. On an 86°F day, asphalt can reach roughly 135°F, hot enough to blister paw pads, and slickrock and dark talus behave the same way. The American Kennel Club's test is the one we use: press the back of your hand to the surface and hold it for 10 seconds. If you cannot, your dog cannot either. Route around it, or come back at dusk.
Start before the sun, break before the dog asks, and test hot rock with your own hand.
Water Strategy: Carry More Than the Math Says
Start with the baseline. A dog needs roughly 1 oz of water per pound of body weight per day at rest, so a 60 lb dog drinks close to 2 quarts before it does anything. Work and heat multiply that, and there is no precise field formula for how much, so our rule is simple: figure what the day should need, then carry more, and never count a creek as water until you have confirmed it is running. By late summer, the blue line on the map is a rumor.
Then offer it often. Small amounts every 15 to 30 minutes beat a long dry stretch and a tank-up, because water offered during the effort is water that gets used during the effort. Many dogs will not stop to drink on their own while they are working, so the habit has to be yours: stop, pour, wait, repeat. Water works on the outside of the dog too. At every crossing, get your trail partner wet. Not a splash across the back, but water worked to the skin at the belly, groin, and armpits, where the coat is thin and the big blood vessels run close to the surface. On a thick double coat, surface water sits on top of the fur and does little. To the skin is what counts.
The reason a soak-down works is evaporative cooling, and the mechanism is worth understanding, because it is also the emergency protocol later in this article. Evaporating water pulls heat off the body, and moving air is what drives the evaporation. A wet dog in a breeze cools fast. A wet dog in dead, humid air barely cools at all. Wet the dog, then find the wind.

Sun Protection: Shade, Timing, and a Sun Shirt
Dogs sunburn. Thin single coats, clipped coats, white and light-pigmented dogs, and the sparsely furred spots every dog carries, meaning the nose, ear tips, and belly, all burn under enough exposure, and high-altitude sun delivers enough exposure fast. A dog shaved down for summer is the avoidable version of this: do not. A double coat insulates against heat and sun both, and clipping it away trades a self-regulating system for bare skin.
The order of operations is the same as it is for us. Shade and timing come first, because the sun you avoid costs nothing to carry. Then cover what the route will expose. For thin-coated and clipped dogs on long days above treeline, that means a sun shirt: a light, wicking UPF layer that blocks the sun without trapping heat, the same idea as the hooded sun layer half the people on any July ridge are already wearing. Soaked at a creek, it doubles as an evaporative layer that keeps working for the next half mile.

Reading Heat Stress Before It Becomes Heatstroke
Panting is normal. The signal is the change from your dog's normal, and it escalates in a recognizable order. Early heat stress looks like panting that turns heavy, loud, and relentless, panting that does not settle during a shade break, along with a tongue hung fully wide, slowing or lagging on climbs the dog would usually attack, and a dog that starts hunting shade on its own. The AVMA lists anxiousness, heavy panting, and restlessness among the first warning signs, and they show up well before the dangerous ones.
The dangerous ones are unmistakable once you know them: drool that turns thick and ropey, gums and tongue gone brick red, a wobbly or drunken gait, vomiting or diarrhea, and confusion. Heatstroke is the far end of that line. It generally involves a body temperature above roughly 105°F, at which point organs start taking damage, and the advanced signs in the AKC's heatstroke guidance, pale or bluish gums, collapse, and seizures, mean the emergency is already fully underway.
Some dogs reach that line far sooner than others. Brachycephalic breeds, the short-nosed dogs, cannot move enough air to pant efficiently and carry the highest risk. Thick double-coated dogs hold heat in summer the way they hold it out in winter. Overweight dogs, seniors, very young dogs, and dogs with heart or airway disease all run on reduced margin. And early-season heat is its own trap: a fit dog that has not seen a hot day since September is not acclimated in June, no matter how strong it is.
The reason to act on the early signs rather than the late ones is arithmetic. In UK primary-care veterinary data on heat-related illness in dogs, dogs treated while signs were still mild nearly always survived, and once signs were severe, roughly half did not. The gap between heavy panting and a wobbly gait is your entire margin. Use it.
The tell is panting that will not settle; the emergency is thick drool, brick-red gums, and a dog that staggers.
If the Dog Overheats: Cool First, Transport Second
The old field advice was to load the dog and race for the clinic. Current veterinary emergency guidance reverses the order: cool first, transport second, because minutes spent at a dangerous core temperature are what do the damage, and the drive cools nothing. The UK researchers behind the largest studies of canine heat-related illness put it exactly that way in their guidance for owners: get the temperature down where you stand, then go.
For a young, healthy dog, the fastest safe method is immersion in the coldest water you can reach, a creek, a lake, a stock tank, with the head kept above the surface the whole time. The old fear that cold water causes shock or dangerous overcooling has not held up in the research. Studies found that water between 33°F and 60°F, mountain-creek cold, cooled dogs faster than warm water and did it safely.
For a senior, sick, or short-nosed dog, or when there is nothing to immerse the dog in, use evaporative cooling: pour water over the whole body continuously and drive air across it with wind, fanning, or a vehicle's air conditioning once you are moving. What you should not do is drape wet towels over the dog and leave them. A towel warms in minutes and then holds heat in, and it was the most common thing owners tried in the UK data and one of the least effective.
Offer drinking water only if the dog is alert and swallowing normally. Never pour water into the mouth of a dog that is wobbly, dull, or unresponsive, because it can go down the airway instead. And stop active cooling once the dog comes back to itself, with panting easing, eyes tracking, and a steady gait, or a rectal temperature down to around 103°F if you carry a thermometer.
Then go to the vet, even if the recovery looks complete. Heatstroke does its worst work internally, on clotting, kidneys, and gut, and that damage can take hours to show, which is why the AKC's guidance is unambiguous: a dog that has overheated gets examined, recovered-looking or not. Cool the dog, call the clinic from the trailhead, and drive.
Cold water immediately, airflow constantly, and a vet visit regardless of how good the recovery looks.
